Having successfully made the transition to a monthly publication, and overcome the financial constraints of the previous year, Doctor Who Monthly (as it would be called up until issue 84) started to move away from the 'kids comic' it had been previously, and begin to give its readers more in-depth features and articles about their favourite show.

1981 was an exciting year for DWM; it reached 50 issues and was able to cover Tom Baker's final Season, and introduce the new Doctor (Issue 55). A tradition it carries on to this day (see issues 342 and 359).

As the year progressed, the Archive features began to increase their detail, together with the Episode Guide. Giving fans a greater knowledge of the history of Doctor Who.
