Doctor Who Weekly (as the Magazine was originally titled until Issue 44) was the brain-child of Dez Skinn one of Marvel Comics' Editors. Skinn had managed to obtain agreement with the BBC in 1979. Tom Baker was signed up to help promote the first issue.

Skinn contacted Jeremy Bentham - who was part of the fledgling DWAS - and made a deal for Bentham to provide 3 features per issue.

From October 10th - 12th 1979 Tom Baker's promotional tour took in London and the Midlands, and was even covered in The Daily Mail with an Article entitled 'Pow! Guess Who is going into comics?'. It was also covered by regional BBC news programme Midlands Today when Baker dropped in on a primary school in Coventry.
